How Do UVC Air Purifiers Work?

You probably know that the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV) causes painful sunburn. But did you know that another kind of ultraviolet light can be installed to keep your house’s air clean?

The sun gives off two types of dangerous UV rays, UVA and UVB. These dangerous rays can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, wrinkles and other kinds of premature aging.

There’s another kind of UV light, referred to as UVC. While direct exposure to this ultraviolet light is bad for your skin or eyes, it can safely be utilized to disinfect air, water and some surfaces.

Northern Comfort Inc uses this light in some of our systems to enhance air filtration in Mankato area residences.

How Ultraviolet Light is Used

This specific wavelength is referred to as “germicidal” as it kills the DNA of bacteria and viruses. When pathogens travel through this light, they eventually cease to exist as they can’t multiply.

This makes UVC light a strong substitute to chemical disinfection. Germicidal light is applied in many disinfection uses, like medical laboratories and hospitals. It’s also employed to sterilize drinking water and other liquids produced in food processing.

It’s becoming more popular to freshen air in residences in Mankato area. That’s due to the fact it can also eradicate frequent indoor contaminants such as mold, mildew and bacteria. This is an additional benefit for family members who suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma.

Having Germicidal UV Light in Your House

We place a germicidal UV light in your HVAC system’s ductwork. Since the light is placed within the ductwork, it makes it compatible with many heating and cooling equipment. This also keeps its light securely restricted while giving strong disinfection for your house’s air.

Contaminated air is freshened in a two-step process, first flowing through your air filter and then the UV light before moving across your house. Even when your heat or air conditioning isn’t on, these lights still operate to keep your air, ductwork and home comfort system clean.

This whole-house product is better than a portable air purifier, which can only clean the air in one room. Portable air purifiers also can’t clean your ductwork or the innerworkings of your HVAC equipment. A clean HVAC system is often a more efficient one that may even operate for an extended period of time. And, some portable air purifiers are known for creating ozone.

When thinking over getting a germicidal lamp for your residence, it’s critical to choose one that doesn’t create ozone. While ozone is good at eliminating odors and chemicals, it can also irritate your lungs and cause other respiratory problems.
